The cover of The Future of Owls. A grey owl holding a glowing blue light sits on the branch of a huge blue tree, watched by a tiger, a lion, a panda, a polar bear and two ponies. A smiling old lady with a wand walks down a path between two little cottages, under stormy skies and a butterfly.

Every word is hers

In 2012, when Erica Flavell was four, her dad Brett wrote down her stories by hand, word for word. They were elaborate, comical and often profound. Six of them are in this book, kept exactly as she told them, so other children can hear them the way she meant them.

How the book came about

Narrated by Erica Flavell. Illustrated by Abigail Roscoe.

More about the book

What an early reader said

As an adult I loved the story of The Future of Owls, such a sweet and happy ending. I can almost see children acting this out.

It shows pure innocence of thought and how carefree a story can be told.

…it will appeal to young children starting to read on their own, as there are no grammatical rules to follow, just the stories to enjoy.
